Metamask is by far the most popular browser extension crypto wallet in the crypto industry. It is a non-custodial wallet, which means you’ll take full responsibility for the safety and security of the wallet.
Being a browser extension wallet, Metamask has several advantages, which include not having to install a big app on your computer, and the ability to synchronize your activities between the extension on the computer and the Metamask mobile app.
The wallet currently supports two blockchains, Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain with all their supported tokens and non–fungible tokens (NFTs). In this guide, we show you how to use the wallet smoothly even if you’re an absolute beginner.
Download Metamask Extension
First things first, you need to download and install the Metamask extension on your computer. You need to be careful here because you may end up on the wrong website and get a compromised version.

Ensure you’re visiting the official Metamask website before clicking on the download button. This will download the extension to your computer in only a few seconds. After that, you can initialize the installed extension and then activate it.
You can use it with Google Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and even Edge browser. Check the permissions it seeks and make sure you’re comfortable with them before agreeing to proceed.
Initialization
The next thing is that the wallet will prompt you to set it up. This is where you click on the Get Started button and then you’ll be prompted to either import a seed phrase or create a new one. We’re assuming that you just started using the wallet, so we’ll go ahead and create a new wallet.
The next thing is to create a password. The password will be required for future access to the wallet, and must be easy enough to remember but difficult enough for others to find hard to guess. After creating a strong password which the wallet affirms, click on Create and you’re done.
Back up Your Seed Phrase
Now it’s time to back up your wallet using your seed phrase. Your seed phrase is a 12 or 24-word phrase that you can use to recover your wallet under any circumstance. Remember Metamask is a non-custodial wallet and you’re fully responsible for keeping it.

This also means that if anything happens, no one, not even the Metamask team can help you recover your wallet. Only your seed phrase can help you with that, so you should take this step very seriously.
It is advisable that you write down the words in the order in which they are presented. It should be written on a piece of paper and kept in a safe place where only you can access.
To confirm that you actually wrote down the seed phrase, the wallet will ask you to enter the words you wrote down and then click on All Done. You’ll then be ushered into the wallet interface.
Fund the Wallet
Now that your wallet is all set, you need to fund it. You can do this by transferring funds to the wallet from your personal wallet, or you can buy crypto assets directly from an exchange and then send them to the wallet.
To get the wallet address to send the assets to, click on the wallet icon and choose the appropriate blockchain for the assets you wish to receive. If it is an ERC20 token, choose Ethereum and if BEP20, choose BNB Smart Chain.
From then on, you can swap the tokens and use them to trade on decentralized exchanges, or interact with decentralized applications.
Final Thoughts
Congratulations! You have your Metamask wallet set for use and you can use it as you wish going forward. Remember to keep it safe and secure because you’re the sole keeper.
Like any other wallet, don’t share your wallet details such as the seed phrase and private keys with anyone for any reason.
